Development of Holographic Video Representations
Developing efficient representations, compression methods, and rendering systems for high-resolution holographic and light-field video.
Holographic and light-field displays can present three-dimensional scenes with natural motion parallax, but the large number of views and pixels required by these displays creates major challenges for video capture, representation, storage, transmission, and real-time rendering.
This project develops representations and processing systems that make high-quality holographic video practical. Current research directions include:
- light-field video representation and compression;
- real-time rendering and selective decoding;
- frame translation and view synthesis;
- capture, display simulation, and quality evaluation; and
- immersive viewing across holographic, virtual-reality, and conventional displays.
The work builds on the lab’s research in cinematic light-field video, multi-gigapixel rendering, holographic display simulation, and viewer-centred quality assessment.
